FREMONT – Though the TRAC swimming championships loom this week, the Fremont Ross teams had different concerns in Tuesday night’s duel meet: Figuring out its lineup for sectionals in just a couple week’s time.
Girls coach Tina Moses and boys coach Phil Moran are still debating with themselves about which athletes to use in which events when the sectional and used Tuesday night’s duel meet against Notre Dame and St. John’s, respectively, to begin to scratch out the final details.
“We’re really starting to begin thinking about sectionals, so I have girls swimming in events that could possibly be sectional events for them and that was more of what tonight was about,” Moses said. “A lot of them swam in off events, like my top two breaststrokers didn’t swim in the breaststroke tonight.”
The tinkering with the who’s and where’s had little impact on the meet’s overall outcome. The girls defeated Notre Dame 131-54 while the boys coasted by St. John’s 132-48.
“I’m swimming kids in certain things to see if they have a shot at being in one of those four spots (at sectionals),” Moran said. “I’ve got more guys than spots. There are going to be some disappointed boys when it comes to the sectional lineup.
Ross will host the TRAC championships this weekend. The league diving competition will be Friday night, starting at 5 p.m. with the swim events taking place beginning at 10 a.m.Saturday.
The Lady Giants will be vying for the championship. While Findlay is the defending champion, Moses said St. Ursula is the team most standing in Ross’ way of a title.
As for the boys, with state power St. Francis having dominated Northwest Ohio for decades running, Moran said the Little Giants, like every other team, is battling for second.
