FREMONT – Facing an opponent the caliber of Notre Dame Academy, one needs to simply stay close as long as possible. Rarely does a team come back against a team which has won at least a share of the TRAC title for the last six years.
Thursday night, the Eagles showed why they’re the league’s power program and state title contender. Ross fell behind early and played catch-up the rest of the night, losing 63-32.
“They’re a very good team, probably one of the best in the state,” Ross coach Juan Vela said. “Their post players are pretty big and can finish around the rim and their guards are very quick and athletic. It was hard for us to get into any kind of set to do what we do. They did a really good job of taking options away.”
After jumping out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter, the second quarter saw more of the same. The Eagles outscored the Lady Giants 16-7 in the second period to take a 34-14 lead into halftime.
Though his team battled a large deficit, Vela appreciated the fact his players remained competitive until the end.
“I never saw any heads going down or girls giving up in the middle of the quarter or in the game,” Vela said. “They kept batting and tried to figure things out. I think at the end of the day, Notre Dame was just more skilled than us. Our attitude and things we can control, I think we did a good job with.”
Ross returns to action Tuesday night when the Lady Giants travel to Sandusky for a game against the rival Blue Streaks.
