FREMONT – With the regular season complete, the Ross volleyball team is turning its attention to the district tournament.

Olivia DeRodes

But, really, the Lady Giants have had their eye on the postseason since the year began.

“That’s been our goal the whole entire time, to get past first round,” coach Kari Shull said. “We’re playing Toledo Start, I think the girls are focused and ready to go. That’s been my preaching all season long, that we play 22 to play 1 and that’s always been our focus.”

Ross enters the postseason with a record of 5-17 overall, coming off a three-set loss in its season-finale at Central Catholic, 16-25, 14-25, 17-25. In that loss, however, Shull saw her team revert back to some early-season miscues.

“Some of those mistakes I talked about my team had to work on at the start of the season, some of those kind of came back,” Shull said. “Missed serves was a big one on Thursday, we had a quite a few of those.

“My key word of the day would be inconsistency. That’s how we played. I don’t really know, we had a few players off and we would be in and out of playing good volleyball.

“Everybody was just a little bit off.”

AnneMarie Moses

Olivia DeRodes finished the night with six kills, four blocks and nine passes. Anne Maries Moses totaled five kills, 18 passes and six digs. Jazmin Bulger added four kills and two blocks.

Lindsay Weickert led Ross with 22 passes and 15 digs. Sara Hrynciw had nine assists with seven digs.

Olivia Baptista had 11 digs and 10 passes while Izzy Held had five assists.

The Lady Giants’ tournament match will be Wednesday at 6:30 at Toledo Start with the winner advancing to play at St. Ursula Saturday afternoon.

“I’m pretty optimistic,” Shull said. “That’s been our goal the whole entire time, to get past the first round. I think the girls are focused and ready to go.”

Three Lady Giants earn All-TRAC honors

Lindsay Weickert

The TRAC volleyball coaches gathered Sunday to determine the league season honors and three Lady Giants were recognized for their seasons.

Junior hitter Olivia DeRodes led Ross’ attack this season and earned Second Team all-TRAC honors for doing so.

Junior hitter AnneMarie Moses and senior setter Lindsey Weickert were all-league honorable mentions.

“Definitely well-deserved,” Shull said of her players. “I feel good about it, especially with where we fall in the league. I don’t know how it works here, as opposed to in Columbus, where I’m used to, but sometimes when you’re at the bottom of the league they don’t necessary give you (all-league considerations).

“They really voted for who they thought was most talented, so I was super happy and pleased.”
