FREMONT – Just 24 hours earlier Owen Smith was the Ross boys golf team’s fourth golfer and the only one of the top four to miss out on a score in the 40s – a team goal.
But Thursday afternoon, Smith more than made up for it.
He shaved six strokes off his score, shooting the low round of the day and led the Little Giants to a duel match victory, 197-242 over Northwood.
Smith shot a season-low 47.
“He hit the ball very solidly,” coach Jim Scharer said. “He said he missed two or three 1-foot putts or he would have shot 44. He must have had the yips or something, but every time I saw him shoot today, he was good. I saw him on No. 4, which is probably the toughest Par 4 out there, he was on and putted for birdie and made par. He was on the green in regulation on a Par 5 and made par. He did a lot of nice things today.”
Just behind Smith was Dylan Genzman, who shot 48, Zane Rousch had a 50 and Cole Druckenmiller shot a 52.
“We’re getting real close to those four scores in the 40s,” Scharer said. “We’ll get there.
“I was proud of Dylan. He got off to a really bad start but he was one-over on the last three or four holes,” he added. “It could have been a bad night for him but he straightened it out toward the end and gutted it out.”
Thursday’s round was the first time this season Ross’ broke 200 in consecutive events. The Little Giants return to the course Monday morning for the TRAC Championship tournament.
“They’re starting to feel a little bit better about themselves,” Scharer said. “The problem with golf is, it’s only one out of bounds shot or one shot in the pond away from (going away). It changes very fast so you have to be very happy with it when it happens.
“We’re looking forward to competing in the league on Monday. I really hope we can break 400. If we can break 400, I will be elated.”
