FREMONT — A scheduling snafu showed Ross girls golf coach Nicole Kulasa just what her team is made of.
The Lady Giants were finishing up their second TRAC shootout of the season at Red Hawk Run Golf Club Monday afternoon when Kulasa got a phone call.
The Genoa team they were scheduled to host Tuesday were at Fremont Country Club, waiting to tee off, under the impression the match was Monday.
Despite already having played a long day in sun, shooting a team score of 535 over 18 holes, the Lady Giants were game and Ross hightailed it back to Fremont and shoot another nine holes.
“They took the challenge and accepted it. They were’ like ‘Let’s do it!’” Kulasa said. “That shocked me. I was expecting them to say, ‘No, I’m tired.’ But they came out and shot their best. They played the best nine holes they’ve played yet at Fremont Country Club.”
In the nine-hole match with Genoa, Ross shot a team score of 254 with Shelby Level posting a 53, Sarah Widman shooting 65, Mekhia Williams a 67 and Grace Britt carded 69.
Genoa, however, ended up having to withdraw from the competition due to one if its players falling ill.
Ross’ roster consists of just four players – the minimum required to post a team score – all of whom are sophomores and just beginning to learn the game. Monday the team learned resiliency and Kulasa learned how tough her girls are.
“I learned they’re a lot stronger than they portray,” Kulasa said. “I didn’t realize. We’re a young team, you would think that (strength) would come later on.”
In the TRAC shootout, Level shot a team-low of 115. Widman followed with a 137, Williams scored 139 and Britt shot 144.
St. Ursula Academy won the day with a team score of 299.
The Lady Giants return to action Aug. 31 at Bowling Green.
