BOWLING GREEN – Just a couple months ago, the Fremont Ross girls soccer team was just getting to know its new coaches, Abby and Emma Schratt.
The Lady Giants’ season came to a close Wednesday night, in an 11-0 tournament loss to Bowling Green, marking the end of a long journey in a short span of time.
“I definitely wish there were things we did better at the beginning of the year, but we were so fresh and new with everyone,” Emma Schratt said. “I feel like if we played teams again like Perkins or Port Clinton again, we’d have a much better chance to beat them. We were just so new and figuring everything out and things were a little rough. But the season, I think, went better than expected.”
The Lady Giants end the year with a 6-8-2 record, a two-win improvement from the season before.
“I was really proud of them,” Shcratt said. “We had a lot of girls coming out for the first time ever, they came out really hard and strong and they never quit, and they never backed down, and that’s what we want. We were very proud of how they played.”
Ross will have to say good-bye to five seniors, Jelena Burns, Regan Reau, Astyn Schneider, Marissa Terraza-Cobo and Sarah Watson.
“We’re definitely going to miss Regan in the back, she’s our wall,” Schratt said. “She definitely is going to be hard to replace, but her sister, Lauren, is going to have to be the one to step up and take over, so we’re not totally in the lurch back there. Ashtyn, was our leading scorer, she had 16 goals this season, definitely going to be hard to pick that up, but hopefully Elle Bloom can take on that role up there at the striker position.
“Watson, is irreplaceable, you can never find another Watson, she is the only one what her attitude and craziness, you can’t find that anywhere else. Jelena is also a good, strong defender and Marissa has a nice shot on her, when she can find it, and she’s extremely sweet, we’re losing five really good girls.”
