BOWLING GREEN – Six Fremont Ross swimmers will be making the trip next week to Canton to for Division I state swim meet after the Little and Lady Giants swim programs enjoyed stellar performances in the Northwest District meet.

The Lady Giants won the team championship, posting 266 points – 10 more than second-place Rocky River – and captured five event championships as well. The boys, meanwhile, finished sixth as a team with five top eight finishes as well.

Olivia DeRodes

Alexis Prenzlin

The biggest individual days were enjoyed by Olivia DeRodes and Alexis Prenzlin.

DeRodes, finished first in every event she swam in. She won individually in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Her 200 time of 1:52.53 set a new school record, passing the time of 1:52.62, set by Molly O’Conner in 1998.

But DeRodes wasn’t through breaking records. Her mark of 5:04.17 in the 500 broke her own program-record time of 5:05.97.

Then along, with Prenzlin, and MaKennah Fitzgerald and AnneMarie Moses, DeRodes swam legs in the first-place 200 freestyle and medley relays.

In addition to her relay work, Prenzlin also won the breaststroke championship and placed third in the 200 IM, breaking her own school record in the process. Her time of 1:03.11 topped her previous record of 1:03.74

Prenzlin holds the highest seed of any Ross swimmer heading into next week’s state meet. Her breaststroke time seeds her sixth in the event. She is 15th entering the IM.

As for DeRodes, she will be 14th in the 500 and 17th the 200.

DeRodes, Prenzlin, Fitzgerald and Moses are seeded 10th in the 200 medley entering the state meet and 15th the 400 relay (3:33.43).

Fitzgerald, who finished fourth in both the 100 freestyle and backstroke, at the district meet, squeezed into the state meet in the backstroke, her time of 57.74 giving her the 24th, and final, seed at the state meet. Also making the trip to Canton as a 24 seed is Maddie Gallagher, who placed fourth in the breaststroke in 1:06.53.

Moses placed fifth in the butterfly and sixth in 50 freestyle. Though she earned a place on the podium at the district meet, she missed the cut for the state meet.

Gallagher, McKela Elder, Rilee Overmyer and Mara Brown combined for an eighth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:43.70.

Dylan Weisenauer

As for the boys team, the Little Giants placed sixth as a team and were led by Dylan Weisenauer. The junior will be the Ross’ only male representative at the state meet as his third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, with a school-record time of 50.85 seconds, earned him a 15 seed next weekend. He broke the previous record of 51.27 held by Lincoln Fahrbach set in 2007.

Weisenauer set another record but missed out on qualifying for a second event next weekend by an eyelash. He finished fourth at districts in the backstroke, his time of 52.59 missed the final seed at the state meet by a mere 0.03 seconds, but broke the school record of 52.64 set in 2014 by Trent Williams.

The 200 medley relay, comprised of Weisenauer, Case Stevenson, Ethan Taylor and Connor Colston placed fifth at the district meet in a time of 1:39.14 and the 400 freestyle relay, with the same foursome, placed sixth in 3:17.58

Taylor placed eighth in 500 freestyle (4:56.22), Colston finished ninth in the 200  freestyle (1:48.12) and Stevenson took 10th in the breaststroke (1:01.01).

The state swim meet will be held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. The Division I preliminary rounds will be Friday beginning at 9 a.m. and the finals beginning Saturday at 4 p.m.
