The Fremont Ross boys soccer team turned in one of their most complete performances of the season Thursday night, playing to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against River Valley.
From the opening whistle, the Little Giants dictated much of the play, maintaining possession and pushing the pace on the attack. Head coach Alex Coressel praised the effort and energy his team brought to the match.
“We played an overall great game,” Coressel said. “We held a lot of the possession and applied pressure all night. We changed up the lineup and it seemed to spark the entire team. Our defense was solid and our offense really got going and showed a lot of creativity. It was a really good night that I hope can help us moving forward.”
That creativity nearly paid off several times, as Ross peppered the River Valley goal with chances, twice rattling the crossbar and once striking the post. The breakthrough finally came from senior Gabe Wensinger, who buried a shot with his right foot to put the Giants on the board.
While the offense created excitement, the night’s defining moment came on the defensive end. Senior defender Chase Culbertson delivered a highlight-reel sliding save in front of goal, denying what looked to be the go-ahead strike and preserving the 1-1 scoreline.
In net, goalkeepers Gage Babcock and Alek Albrecht combined to give Fremont Ross a strong, steady presence, turning away multiple quality attempts from River Valley.
The draw moves the Little Giants to 2-3-1 on the season. They will be back in action Tuesday night when they host Oregon Clay on what will be a special Senior Night at Don Paul Stadium.
