The Fremont Ross girls tennis team earned a hard-fought victory Tuesday evening, defeating Toledo Whitmer by a 3-2 margin in a matchup that came down to the final set.
Leading the way was No. 1 singles player Elayna Gray, who delivered a strong performance with a 6-4, 6-2 win over an opponent she fell to last season. At No. 3 singles, Shelby Steinberger controlled her match from start to finish, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The decisive point came at No. 2 doubles, where the duo of Abby Stachowiak and Megan Sherman battled back after dropping the opening set in a tiebreaker. With the overall score tied 2-2, the pair dug deep to secure the match — and the team win — with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
Head coach Lisa Wolfe praised her team’s effort, highlighting both resilience and growth from last season.
“This was a good team win. They beat us last year. #2 doubles going into their 3rd set knew the score was 2-2, so this set determined the win and they played determined,” Wolfe said.
With the victory, the Lady Giants build momentum heading into their next contest as they prepare to host Maumee.
