Fremont, OH – The Fremont Ross Lady Giants battled until the final out in Tuesday evening’s Northern Lakes League showdown, but a late surge by Bowling Green lifted the Bobcats to a 7-5 victory on the diamond.
The Lady Giants struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, when Brooklyn Berndt drove in Ruby Almaguer to give Ross an early 1-0 lead. Bowling Green answered quickly, plating three runs in the top of the second inning to shift momentum in their favor.
Refusing to back down, Ross responded with a spark from Almaguer, who roped a triple to drive in two runs and knot the game at 3-3. Both teams traded blows in the fifth, each adding two runs to the scoreboard and keeping the contest deadlocked at 5-all heading into the sixth.
The Bobcats, however, capitalized on key opportunities in the top of the sixth, manufacturing two more runs to pull ahead 7-5. Despite a valiant effort, the Lady Giants were unable to generate another rally in their final at-bats.
Almaguer was sensational at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two triples and a pair of RBIs. Berndt also provided a strong offensive showing, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. The right-hander also went the distance in the circle, tossing all seven innings while surrendering nine hits and seven runs — only three of which were earned — and striking out five.
With the loss, the Lady Giants aim to regroup quickly as they hit the road tonight for a non-conference match-up against Fostoria. First pitch is scheduled for 4:45 PM.
