CLYDE – Mental stamina can be as important as physical endurance.

The Fremont Ross boys tennis team is finding that out first-hand.

The Little Giants dropped their second match of the season, falling to Clyde by a 4-1 score Wednesday. More concerning to coach Lisa Wolfe isn’t the final result, but the fact that the Little Giants won sets by lopsided scores then turned around and gave them right back.

At No. 1 singles, after losing the first set in a tie-breaker, Lucas Cronin roared back to win the second set 6-0. But Clyde’s Daniel Stevens turned around and blanked Cronin 6-0 in the third set for the victory.

Ethan Moyer began his match at No. 2 singles with a definitive 6-1 set win, then lost the next two, 5-6, 0-6.

“The mental toughness part of the game needs (to be) worked on with singles,” Wolfe said. “The lopsided sets that 1 and 2 produced should never go to the opponent.”

Drew Miller won Ross’ only match of the day, winning in three competitive sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

“Drew Miller played very tough today at No. 3,” Wolfe said.

The doubles teams of Evan Oglesbee and Frankie Scott and Isaac Minor and Kurt Harrison each lost in straight sets.

The Little Giants are 0-2 on the young season and are home Thursday, hosting Maumee.
