FREMONT – Following strong performances Wednesday and Thursday, Ross baseball coach Jared King said his team was playing a quality brand of baseball.
Friday afternoon, the Little Giants played a different brand of ball.
The Little Giants managed just two hits while making seven errors in the field on their way to an 11-0, five-inning loss to Findlay.
“This was a bad, bad brand of baseball today,” King said. “I thought it was a lack of energy right from the get-go. I thought our pregame was unmotivated. I told them right for the start, ‘If you don’t change something with your attitude or your gettiup, it’s not going to be pretty.’”
It wasn’t. The Trojans threatened in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs, but pitcher Cole Druckenmiller limited the damage and got out of the inning with Ross trailing by just a run, 1-0.
The third inning followed the same script, with Findlay once again loading the bases with its first three batters of the inning. This time, however, the Trojans cashed in, scoring five times to grow the lead to 6-0.
“I just felt we weren’t prepared today,” King said. “I stressed we have to change that tomorrow. Thank goodness tomorrow is a new day and the great thing about baseball is you play almost every day so you can restart your season every time.”
The loss drops Ross’ record to 2-6 overall, 0-4 in the TRAC.
While King was pleased to see his team stay positive in the loss, he also wants his team to take losing more seriously.
“(In) high school baseball, you have to have that competitive edge, that fire,” King said. “You can only get your butt kicked so many times before something snaps, something clicks. I’m hoping to find sometime soon that turning point, that something click. Whether it’s them getting ticked off or whatever it may be. I want to see a little more competitive fire out of them, a little bit more cutthroat approach.”
The Little Giants travel to Bellevue Saturday morning at 11.
