TOLEDO – The Ross girls tennis team was eager to see just where it stood.
Traveling to Notre Dame Academy, winners of four-straight league titles until finishing second by two points last year, the Lady Giants got a look at where they stand in relation to the Eagles. And some work remains to be done.
Notre Dame swept Ross, 5-0, marking the first time this season the Lady Giants didn’t win at least two flights.
“In order to get better you always have to play a team along the way like this,” coach Lisa Wolfe said. “We’ve had some great wins and you need to throw a Notre Dame in to show yourself exactly where you need to keep working. There always needs to be work.”
Olivia Henry lost at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 1-6. No. 2 singles’ Mallory Hutton lost 2-6, 2-6 and Berlin Swaisgood lost 0-6, 0-6 at No. 3.
In doubles play, Gillian Gallagher and Lily Abdoo lost at No. 1 doubles, 3-6, 1-6 while the No. 2 team of Jurni Kidd and Sophia Biggins lost by a score of 1-6, 0-6.
While Ross wanted to see how it stacked up against Notre Dame, now that the Lady Giants know the gap that remains between the programs, Wolfe isn’t concerned about their confidence suffering as a result.
“Their mood afterward, was disappointed but certainly not really down in the dumps over it,” Wolfe said. “They’re ready to practice what they need to.”
Ross hosts the Michaels Memorial Doubles Invitational Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
