The first week of the Ross Sports Report is in the books. My sincerest thanks to all who visited, read and (hopefully) followed and shared on social media. I hope you’ve liked what you’ve seen this week. There is a lot more where that came from.

The RSR’s free preview will continue through next week, after which I truly hope you’ll decide this coverage of Ross athletics is worth a few of your hard-earned dollars. Remember, when 200 yearly subscribers sign up I will give free access to all Ross students and recent graduates in college.

In case you’ve missed anything, I offer a chance to catch up on the week was was in Ross sports.

Girls tennis:

Monday afternoon Ross won a hard-fought 3-2 match over Clyde thanks to a clutch performance from Olivia Henry.

Two days later, the Lady Giants enjoyed strong performances from all the girls in a 5-0 sweep of Oak Harbor.

The tennis team will be looking to its strong core of singles players to lead the team to success.

Volleyball:

The volleyball team begins play Monday, and the Lady Giants and their new coach have been getting to know one another.

Junior AnneMarie Moses was the first athlete to take part in the RSR’s regular feature, Getting to Know…in which I put unsuspecting kids on the spot and ask them random get-to-know questions. She was a good sport.

Girls soccer:

The girls soccer team begins play Monday against Sandusky Perkins but it’s a victory in the TRAC that has eluded the team’s seniors.

Boys soccer:

The boys soccer team, also beginning play Monday, thinks a winning record is in its future thanks to revamped defense and potentially potent offense.

Also, junior forward Dylan Brady found himself drafted into a Getting to Know…while his teammates jeered him nearby. A good time was had be all, except for maybe Dylan.

Cross country:

The running Little Giants’ season has yet to get underway, but senior Matt Kuyken has been long at work on hitting some high goals.

The rest of the boys and girls cross country teams, while returning some of their top runners, will need to find new voices to lead them.

Boys golf:

The boys golf season is couple weeks old and the Little Giant golf team is taking the long-view. Short on experience, the team is trying to be long with patience as it learns the game.

Girls golf:

Coach Nicole Kulasa learned a little something about the four sophomores that comprise her team. The Lady Giants displayed their mental toughness when they were surprised with an extra nine holes right after playing an 18-hole invitational.

Football:

The Little Giants begin their season Friday but were the focus of the first story published on the RSR. I followed the team for several days in its preseason and chronicled the journey the 2017 Little Giants have taken toward becoming a strong team.

As the football team enters the season, one of the biggest reasons for optimism is the health of junior quarterback Hayden Lehmann, whose sophomore season was derailed by a broken ankle.

While the 2017 Ross football team gets set to start its season, I caught up with a pair of former Little Giants, Jeffrey Barnett and Tray Richardson, now playing football together at Trine University.

That is 15 stories in a week, and this coming week sees boys and girls soccer, volleyball, football and cross country begin their seasons, so the Ross Sports Report is just getting started…
