Fremont – For senior Sara Gross, it was a long time coming. After coming close to her first high school home run on several occasions, Gross finally broke through in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon, launching a go-ahead three-run homer to lift Fremont Ross past Southview, 10-5.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gross stepped to the plate with two runners aboard and delivered a towering shot over the outfield fence, igniting the Lady Giants’ dugout and flipping the momentum. Her blast gave Fremont Ross a 7-5 lead—one they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Lady Giants weren’t done in the fifth, tacking on three more runs in the frame to extend their lead to 10-5 and put the game out of reach.
Lilly Halbeisen continued her hot streak at the plate, going 2-for-3 and playing a key role in the team’s offensive surge.
Freshman Brystol Howey got the start in the circle, allowing seven hits and five earned runs over three innings. Sophomore Brooklyn Berndt came on in relief and delivered a stellar performance, tossing four scoreless innings while surrendering just two hits and striking out two.
With the win, Fremont Ross improves to 12-11 on the season and 3-7 in league play.
The Lady Giants are back in action Monday as they host Clay. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
