LIMA – It took longer than the Ross baseball team would have liked, but the Little Giants’ offense showed up in a big way Tuesday evening.
After struggling to find consistent offense at the plate in Game 1 of its doubleheader at Lima Senior, Fremont Ross pounded the ball in Game 2, salvaging a split of the twinbill. The Little Giants dropped the first game, 7-4 before crushing the Spartans 19-3 in the nightcap.
Ross compiled just six hits, though four of them went for extra bases, in Game 1 where the Spartans scored six runs over the first four innings to take a 6-1 lead. Ross got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth and seventh but it wasn’t enough to rally.
But the Little Giants’ late offense in Game 1 carried over to Game 2. Ross scored five runs in the top of the first of the second game and then two more in the tops of the second and fourth innings.
The Little Giants then scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow open the game. Not only did Ross belt out 15 base hits, the Little Giants also benefitted from 11 Lima Senior errors leading to 10 unearned runs.
Garrett Schneider, who led Ross in Game 1 by going 3-for-4 at the plate, continued his hot hitting by going 5-5 in Game 2 with four RBIs and hit a triple in each game. Cole Druckenmiller went 4-4 in Game 2, also driving in four RBIs. Tim Mosser and Karson Wojdyla each had a pair of hits and combined for five runs batted in.
Gabe Witt earned the complete-game victory, pitching all six innings allowing six hits and five walks with six strikeouts.
The doubleheader split increases Ross’ record to 5-11 overall, 2-8 in the TRAC. The Little Giants are home Wednesday against Oak Harbor.
