FREMONT – With the TRAC boys tennis tournament looming, Little Giant coach Lisa Wolfe reminded her team every point and every game may be the difference between a high seed and a low seed.

The league’s coaches will conference this week ahead of Friday and Saturday’s league tournament and discuss seeding for the five flights. In those discussions, when head-to-head and overall records are not enough to settle who should be seeded where, games won often can be the tie-breaker.

“I said ‘Sometimes we get to the seeding meeting and we talk about games won,’” Wolfe said. “I said ‘We need to work hard on every single game,’ because sometimes it gets down to games.”

The Little Giants helped themselves in that regard Tuesday. Ross shut out TRAC rival Toledo Central Catholic 5-0, losing no more than three games in any set in a major confidence-boosting win, given they defeated a Toledo school so decisively.

“That’s a great thing. A great thing,” Wolfe said. “I saw a lot of patience.”

At No. 1 singles, Nils Nolte rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory while Alex Thatcher was stellar in a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

“Alex always stands out to me, because he’s Alex,” Wolfe said. “He just plays great singles, great doubles, wherever you put him. He just is playing great right now.”

Wolfe was also thrilled with the play of Drew Miller who won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

“Drew just handled that kid he like’s a third-year junior, is what he played like today,” Wolfe said. “This being his first year, it’s so impressive to see.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Lucas Cronin and Ethan Moyer won every game, 6-0, 6-0 in their victory while the No. 1 duo of Trevor Weickert and Sam Long won their match 6-3, 6-2, settling themselves down after a couple disappointing games in the second set.

“No. 1 doubles got a little flustered in the second set,” Wolfe said. “I calmed them down, I said, ‘You won the first set, why are you getting angry now? You’re ahead.’ They settled down and finished off the last three games and won the match. It just takes some talking to sometimes to calm things down.”

The Little Giants are now 12-3 overall and hold a 3-3 mark in the TRAC. Ross travels to Huron Wednesday before closing out the league’s regular season schedule Thursday at home against Whitmer. The TRAC tournament begins Friday morning.
