OREGON – Nevermind the wind and cold. Nevermind the fact all the other teams at Fremont Ross had their events cancelled or postponed, due to weather conditions which were more reminiscent of February than mid-April, leaving the boys tennis team as the last ones standing.
The Little Giants had a match Tuesday and weren’t about to let wind, cold or anything else keep them from playing. And when they hit the court, they wasted little time dispatching of TRAC foe Oregon Clay, 5-0.
“I just think my kids love to play tennis,” coach Lisa Wolfe said. “Once you get warmed up up out there, it isn’t (that bad).
“I never hear any complaining from our guys,” she added. “I think we’re just excited when we get to play tennis. Obviously with the way they played tonight, they wanted to be there and they all played great matches.”
The Little Giants swept the singles matches thanks to wins by Nils Nolte (No. 1 singles), Alex Thatcher (No. 2) and Drew Miller (No. 3).
“(Nolte) had the toughest kid there, of course,” Wolfe said of her No. 1 singles player. “It was very close, the first four games, like 2-2. He pretty much adjusted his game himself. He did a great job. He was hitting hard, he was hitting low and he figured out this kid has a weaker backhand than a forehand.”
In doubles play, the team of Sam Long and Trevor Weickert won No. 1 doubles by winning every game while Lucas Cronin and Ethan Moyer also rolled to a win at No. 2.
“The wind is always a factor in Fremont, so we’re used to that, and that’s what we got today – a lot of wind. It was just swirling.”
The Little Giants (7-2 overall, 2-2 TRAC) are back in action Wednesday when they host rival Sandusky.
