Walsh Park

Robert L. Walsh Park is the home for the Ross High men’s and women’s cross-country teams. The park was dedicated to Walsh, an avid walker and naturalist, in 1996. The park includes trails used for walking and/or running.  The park overlooks the Sandusky River and is located on Morrrison Street right next to the historic Camelback Bridge.  The city has since built a path around the park and the Elite Runners Club of Fremont has developed the course that the cross-country team now uses.

Directions:

  • From Toledo area: Take either US20 or Ohio Turnpike (east to Fremont exit) SR 53. Turn right (south) on SR 53. Come over the overpass into Fremont city limits (fairgrounds on corner). Continue straight onto Rawson Ave to State St. Turn left onto State St (head east). Continue on State St. over the bridge heading east. Turn right onto Morrison Road (south). Walsh Park will be on your right hand side.
  • From Cleveland area: Take Ohio Turnpike east to exit 91 (Fremont/Port Clinton). Turn south on SR 53 toward Fremont. Come over the overpass to Fremont city limits (fairgrounds on corner).Continue straight onto Rawson Ave. Third traffic light will be State St. (gas station on left). Turn left onto State St (head east). Continue on State St. over the bridge heading east. Turn right onto Morrison Road (south). Walsh Park will be on your right hand side.
  • From Columbus area: Take US 23 (North) to SR 53 (South) at Upper Sandusky. Take right off ramp on SR53 (south) through Tiffin to Fremont city limits. Merge onto US 20 Bypass around Fremont. Exit on SR 53 (Fremont/Port Clinton). Head south on SR 53 toward Fremont. Come over the overpass to Fremont city limits (fairgrounds on corner). Beck Family Tennis Center

As of 2004 the Beck Family Tennis Center has been the home for the Ross High men’s and women’s tennis teams.  There are eight (8) courts at the facility located on Fangboner Road adjacent to the baseball and softball complex.  Currently center court is the only court that is illuminated; however plans are in place to ensure the remaining 7 courts are eventually lite. In 2011 a tennis building including restrooms, storage and a shelterhouse was constructed.

Track

The current track at Ross High School opened in 1979.  The old facility was built of cinder and was located around the football field at old Harmon Stadium.  Because of that the track was in the shape of a square instead of an oval.  The new track which is a quarter-of-a-mile aroudn is amde of a product similar to asphalt.  The media booth, completed in 1999 by donations and built by students from Vanguard Vocational Center, has a concession stand and storage area below.  The Track is located directly behind Ross High School.

Alumni Fields

The Alumni Fields is the home of the Ross High baseball and softball teams. The complex was dedicated in 2004 and consists of two baseball diamonds as well as two softball diamonds. A concession stand, restrooms, media booth and dressing-room space for the baseball teams are also included in the on-site building. The entryway to the complex is boardered with deidcation pavers donated by pans, past players and athletes of the baseball and softball program. The complex is located on Fangboner Road adjacent to the tennis facility.

Wrestling

The Ross grapplers practice in a new 5,000 sq/ft room that’s adjacent to the pool. This facility was built in 2006. It also is the home of the Fremont Middle school wrestling team as well as the biddy wrestling program. The old wrestling room was only 1,400 sq/ft and was located underneath the sage in the high school gymnasium. The entryway to this new complex has a dedication wall sponsored by past-and-present athletes and supports of the wrestling program.

Hawk-Bucci Natatorium

The Hawk-Bucci Natatorium is the home for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams for both Ross High School and St. Joe High School.  The facility, built in 2006 with private funds raised by the Fremont Area Foundation. was dedicated five years later in the names of local business owner Hal Hawk and former swim coach and athletic director Art Bucci.  The complex holds 750 people and is considered one of the best-high school swimming and diving facility in the state of Ohio.  The pool has ten (10) 25 yard lanes; it has served as the venue for many invitational and postseason events for high schools and colleges.

Ross High Gymnasium

“The Purple Pit” – or the Ross High Gymnasium was constructed in 1958.  It has been home to the school’s volleyball team as well as the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the wrestling team.  New bleacher seats with the capacity of approximately 1,300 were installed in the early 2000s. The gym also includes a stage area.  The entryway to the gymnasium hoses the Hall of Fame Room where pictures and biographies of all the Ross Hall of Fame inductees are located. Concession stand, restrooms and the athletic office are also located here.

Varity Kelsey-Hayes Field

The Varity Kelsey-Hayes Field is the home for the Ross High men’s and women’s soccer teams.  The original home of the Ross soccer teams was the courtyard to the west of the current high school where the new Fremont Middle School now stands. Over the years bleacher seating as well as an electric scoreboard have been added to enhance the facility.  The complex is located directly behind Ross High School next to the districts transportation offices.

Don Paul Stadium

Don Paul Stadium at Harmon Field is the football home for the Fremont Ross Little Giants and the St. Joseph Central Catholic Crimson Streaks.  The field’s original name was Harmon Stadium – named after New York Resident William E. Harmon who wanted stadiums all across the country to bear his name.  IN2005 retired car dealer and prominent citizen and Little Giant supporter, Don Paul, gave a substantial monetary gift to help renovate the existing home side of the facility.   The Stadium now bears his name – Don Paul Stadium at Harmon Field.  The facility also includes a training room, two locker-rooms and a team meeting room. The grass field was replaced with FieldTurf prior to the 2005 football season.
