TIFFIN – Jared King didn’t intend to have his pitcher throw a complete game in Monday’s season-opener at Tiffin Columbian.

Cole Druckenmiller

But Cole Druckenmiller didn’t give him much choice either.

Druckenmiller pitched efficiently and effectively, mixing his pitches and keeping the Tornadoes’ hitters out of sync as he led the Little Giant baseball team to a 3-1 season-opening victory Monday.

“Cole Druckenmiller threw an outstanding game,” King said. “You never really want to have to rely on your guy to throw a complete game in the colder weather this early in the year, but Cole kept his pitch count to 67 pitches through seven innings and did a nice job mixing up his looks. I’m very proud of his effort on the mound tonight.”

Druckenmiller gave up just four hits and no walks while striking out five. When Columbian did put the ball in play, the Little Giant fielders were there.

“Defensively, I was very pleased with our effort tonight,” King said. “We attacked the baseball and took great routes to put ourselves in a good position.”

Ross scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth and added two more in the fifth. Tiffin got one back in the bottom half of the fifth but Druckenmiller allowed no more.

Though Ross only managed two hits, a double by Jonathan Szymanowski and a single by Gabe Witt, the Little Giants put the ball in play and benefitted from doing so as Columbian committed seven errors defensively, leading to all of Ross’ runs being unearned.

“We still have a lot to work on the plate but it’s still early and it’s never easy to swing in the cold,” King said. “Our guys did a nice job battling all night and finding ways here and there to put some runs across.”

The Little Giants return to action Wednesday when they travel to Norwalk for a 4:45 first pitch.
