FREMONT – Swimmers wait all season for the only events on the schedule that really matter: The postseason meets.
Championship Season kicked off this weekend and the Ross swim programs were more than ready.
The Little and Lady Giants combined to send 25 athletes on to next weekend’s district meet, just one meet away from qualifying for the state meet.
All that individual success paved the way for outstanding team achievement as well as the Lady Giants won the sectional championship, totaling 421 points – four more than second-place Madison Comprehensive – while the boys finished fifth place out of an 18-team field.
The Lady Giants won a trio of events. MaKennah Fitzgerald, Alexis Prenzlin, AnneMarie Moses and Olivia DeRodes combined to win the 200 medley relay and will be the event’s No. 1 seed entering the district meet. Fitzgerald also won the backstroke and Prenzlin took first place in the breaststroke.
Prenzlin was also second in the individual medley, DeRodes was second in the 200 and 500 freestyles, and Maddie Gallagher was second to Prenzlin in the breaststroke.
The best finishes for the boys team came from multiple third-place finishes. Connor Colston, Case Stevenson, Ethan Taylor and Dylan Weisenauer combined for third in both the medley and 400 freestyle relays. Weisenauer also placed third in the 100 butterfly and Dane Michael placed third in the 1-meter diving competition.
Quality swims were not exclusive to just those who qualified for the district meet. Coach Phil Moran was thrilled with the personal-best times that were broken over the weekend. Allison Taylor dropped 7.76 seconds in the 200 free and nearly 17 seconds in the 500. Chloe Weiker cut 8.96 seconds in the IM and 7.63 seconds in backstroke while Hannah Widman dropped 6.98 seconds in 200 IM and 1.05 seconds in the 100 fly.
Among the highlight non-qualifying swimmers for the boys was Andy Burroughs’ dropping 8.84 seconds in 200 and 2.33 seconds in the 500 all while recovering from a three-week battle with mono.
Roman Contreras dropped .59 in 50 free and .79 in the 100 fly, Cole Dymond cut .57 in the 50 free and 2.82 seconds in the 100 back. Zach Edmonds dropped 3.49 seconds in the 100 free and 4.82 seconds in the breaststroke. Sam Sweeney trimmed .72 in the 50 free, Trenton Ward dropped 6.34 seconds in the 500 free and 1.7 seconds in the 100 back.
“We had incredible swims out of our younger swimmers,” Moran said.

The District meet will be held at Bowling Green State University. The Diving competition will be Tuesday, at 2:45 p.m. while the swimming will be Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
“Looking forward to see all of the qualifiers swim even faster next week and advance to the State meet,” Moran said.
