COLUMBUS – If the Ned Reeb Invitational, one of, if not the biggest regular season swim meet of the year, is any indication of things to come, it could be banner year for a number of Ross swimmers.

Alexis Prenzlin

Olivia DeRodes

The Lady Giant swim team had tremendous showing Saturday at Ohio State University in a meet used as a measuring stick for the state meet, while the boys team also had numerous personal-best performances.

Out of 38 teams, the Lady Giants finished third and placed in the top five finishers of five events, including a pair of first-places.

“I thought the girls swam really well for the short rest we gave them, so I was pretty excited at the times,” coach Phil Moran said. “I think you can see some of the stuff we’ve been doing in the weight room and our pool have paid off. You can see a definite increase in power.

“Hopefully that will get them to buy into it a little bit more and should lead to some good results here at the end of the season.”

AnneMarie Moses

MaKennah Fitzgerald

Headlining the Lady Giants’ performances was Alexis Prenzlin’s victory in the 100 breaststroke, where she clocked a time of 1:04.64, less than a second off her own school record. To win the Ned Reeb, and do so by a full second over her nearest competitor, bodes well for Prenzlin’s future.

“She swam really strong, that was good to see,” Moran said. “We have a little bit more work to do and I think she’ll be good. We always kind of look at it in terms of, where were you last year at this time? And where are you at this year? And if you’re ahead of the pace by a lot or a good chunk, it’ll pay off at the end.”

Prenzlin isn’t the only swimmer working above her pace. She combined with Olivia DeRodes, MaKennah Fitzgerald and AnneMarie Moses to win the 200 medley relay and place fourth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Individually, DeRodes, Fitzgerald and Moses were strong as well.

Dylan Weisenauer

Connor Colston

DeRodes finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500. Fitzgerald was seventh in the 100 backstroke and Moses was 13th in the butterfly.

“Just about all those girls are ahead of the pace right now,” Moran said.

Maddie Gallagher finished 10th in the breaststroke and Faith Zimmerman scored a new personal best time of 1:03.49 in the backstroke. Zimmerman, along with Mara Brown, Rachel Haitonic and Rilee Overmyer, combined to finished 14th in the 400 relay. Haitonic also placed 10th in the 500 and 24th in the 200 as well.

“All in all, they swam really well,” Moran said of the Lady Giants.

The boys team also had a fine showing, finishing 10th out of 34 teams with Dylan Weisenauer leading the way. Weisenauer scored the Little Giants’ two top-10 finishes as he placed sixth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the backstroke.

Case Stevenson

Ethan Taylor

“I’m pretty happy with where he is at, he swam a little bit faster this year than last year,” Moran said of Weisenauer. “I think he’s on the right track, training-wise. Those were good swims.”

Weisenauer then swam legs of the 200 medley relay (11th place) and the 200 freestyle relay (13th) along with Connor Colston, Case Stevenson and Ethan Taylor.

Colston clocked a personal-best time of 1:53.19 in the 200 freestyle. Taylor and Stevenson finished 15th and 16th, in the 200 IM and every member of the 400 relay (Colston, James Elder, Braedyn Price and Andy Burroughs) set a new PR in their leg of the event to close the meet on a high note for the Little Giants.

The swim teams get back in the pool Thursday at 5 p.m. as they host Perrysburg in a dual meet.
