TOLEDO – Golf can be among the most frustrating of sports. The slightest error in the mechanics of a swing can sail a ball far wide of its intended target and send a round in a continuous downward spiral.

Improvement comes, seemingly, in increments of inches and with long plateaus in between.

But, occasionally, a day arrives where the game reminds the player why he, or she, goes through all the frustration and pays off all the hard work with major dividends.

Thursday afternoon, the Little Giant boys golf team had such a day.

In its last match of the regular season, Ross achieved one of its longest-term goals, breaking 180 over nine holes with three of its four top golfers setting, or tying, career-low rounds. That the Little Giants lost the match against Whitmer, by a score of 169-179, was irrelevant to coach Jim Scharer and his team.

“I was really, really pleased and proud of the kids,” Scharer said. “We set a lot of goals, we wanted to get into the 370s on 18 holes and into the 170s on nine holes and today was their last chance to do it and they did it. It was really great.”

Cole Druckenmiller led the way, shooting a career-low round of 41, and Luke O’Brien also shot a career-best 47. Braxton White, despite being 7-over par through the day’s first four holes, rallied to shoot even par over his last five holes to end the day tying his career-best round of 43. And Mike Keegan, who carded a pair of Par-5 triple bogies, still managed to turn in a 48 – just one shot behind his career-low round.

That all four scorers are seniors – as is Zane Rusch, who spent much of the season as one of the team’s top performers – achieved their long-standing team goal in the final match of the careers, was a fitting end to their careers.

“The kids we really, really, excited,” Scharer said. “It was really fun to watch and it was great for them, because they didn’t have a Senior Night (which was cancelled due to weather), so to do something like that in their final match, was great to see.

“It was a good night for the Little Giant golf team.”

While the regular season has come to a close, the Little Giants still have one more tournament and one more item on their to-do list. They will compete at the sectional tournament Tuesday at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green. While Ross has had its struggles at that course over the last couple seasons, they’ve never entered an event with as much confidence and good feeling as they are now.

“We want to be under 400,” Scharer said. “That will probably be one of the stiffest challenges we’ve faced all year because, if I’m not mistaken, over the last couple years, 415 or 418 is about the best we’ve done at Stone Ridge.

“I don’t have any doubt the kids can do it and they have the mental fortitude to start out good and finish well.”
