MAUMEE – Even on the Fremont Ross boys golf team’s best day, a match against Anthony Wayne was going to be a challenge. But Wednesday afternoon was not the Little Giants’ best day on the course.

Playing a match-play format duel event Wednesday at Brandywine Country Club against a talented Anthony Wayne team, Ross started out slowly and never recovered in a 4-0 defeat at that hands of the Generals.

“We just didn’t have it tonight,” Ross coach Jim Scharer said. “Anthony Wayne played extremely well. Only two of our kids had every played Brandywine before and we made some mistakes with yardages and out of bounds. We didn’t play up to our standards by any stretch of the imagination and I’m not so sure that even if we would have, it would have made any difference. Anthony Wayne is one of the top three or four of this (upcoming) 20-team sectional, they’ll probably make it out of sectionals.”

Prior to the match, the coaches agreed to play straight-up match-play and not keep individual scorecards. Talking to his team during the round, not keeping track of strokes, may have been a blessing in disguise.

“I think we got beat at least by six holes in every match,” Scharer said. “Every kid I talked to after three holes was behind by three except for Braxton (White), who was behind by one. We got off to a really poor start and, in match play, it’s really hard to come back.”

The Little Giants conclude their regular season schedule Thursday when tey travel to Bedford Hills in Toledo for a duel match against TRAC foe Whitmer.
