TOLEDO – Chalk it up as a learning experience.

The Lady Giant golf team had a long, hot day on a difficult golf course Monday at the TRAC Jamboree at Stoney Ridge Golf Course.

Ross shot a team score of 495, to finish sixth in the Jamboree.

“It was a rough day, all around,” coach Nicole Kulasa said. “We had a rough round. There’s no easy way to put that.”

With the season winding down – Ross has only one more match, next Tuesday against Tiffin Columbian, before the sectional tournament on Oct. 3 – Kulasa said the Lady Giants need to spend the next two weeks tightening up their game and making smarter shots.

“We’re going to use it as a learning experience for what’s to come the rest of the season because we definitely don’t want another match like we had today,” Kulasa said.

“It was definitely the heat and the course is a tough course,” she added. “If you look at the other scores posted, St. Ursula and Notre Dame, they were all high scores. There were three or four low scores and after that they were pretty high. The heather and the sand ate us alive today.”

Alana Smith shot a solid round, scoring an 18-hole season-low total of 105. Shelby Level followed for Ross with a 126, Sarah Widman posted a 129 and Mekhia Williams carded a 135.

“(Smith) played really well,” Kulasa said. “I wish we could have put three other scores with her. She’s hitting the ball much better, she’s making great contact with the ball. We talked a lot about shot placement and that’s what we’re going to look at moving forward through the week into next week as we prepare for sectionals.

“But the scores today showed we have a lot of work to do.”
