OREGON – Playing on the hardest course they’ll play all year and without one of their best golfers, the Little Giants boys golf team kept expectations modest and realistic.

And then surpassed them.

“In my mind, I always have a number I want us to shoot and today we beat that number with our personnel,” Ross coach Jim Scharer said. “I thought, without Cole (Druckenmiller, who missed the event due to a prior engagement), 210 would probably be what we’d shoot. Our fourth score is never real good and now we’re having to go even deeper and Maumee Bay is the toughest course we play all year.”

Despite missing Druckenmiller and the difficulty of the course – not the mention Tuesday’s scorching heat – the Little Giants came in two shots under Scharer’s prediction, carding a 208.

Zane Rusch shot a team-low score of 47 while Braxton White followed with a 48. Luke O’Brien posted a score of 54 and Owen Wright rounded out the scoring with a 59.

“If Cole is there, he can shoot a 45, in reality, we probably would have broke 200, which is a good score for us at Maumee Bay,” Scharer said. “I was really happy that Owen Wright shot that fourth score for us.

“It was hot, it was really hot, and the kids sucked it up and played and gave it all they had. I was not disappointed with their scores at all.”

Genoa won the match, shooting a team score of 172.

The Little Giants return to the course Thursday when they host Old Fort at the Fremont Country Club.

Lady Giants shoot 237

The Lady Giants posted a team score of 237 Tuesday in a duel match against Perrysburg, which shot a 163.

Alana Smith’s 57 provided the Lady Giants with their low-score of the day while Shelby Level was one shot behind, with a 58. Sarah Widman carded a 60 while first-year player Jasannah Sabiers shot a season-best 60.

Ross is back in action at Eagles Landing in Oregon for a TRAC Jamboree at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
