SANDUSKY – Following its sectional tournament loss to Anthony Wayne, Fremont Ross baseball coach Jared King wanted his team to remember that though its postseason run had ended, the season was not yet over.
With three games remaining on their schedule, the Little Giants want to close out the season on a high note and they’re on their way to doing just that.
Ross came out of the gates swinging Thursday afternoon, taking an early lead and never looking back in a 9-3 victory over Sandusky Perkins.
“I thought the focus was there, moreso toward the beginning of the game,” King said. “We came out on fire with the bats at the beginning of the game, but that kind of wore off and the focus kind of wore off a little bit as the game went on.
“I was pretty pleased with how we played and how we approached our at-bats and our defensive situations,” he added. “Overall, I thought we played a pretty good game.”
Caleb Bennison got things started with a lead-off double to begin the game. Soon after he was driven in by Garrett Schneider to kick off a three-run first inning.
Schneider was just getting started. The junior went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, including a triple.
“At the beginning of the year, he was struggling,” King said of Schneider. “I thought he had happy feet inside the box, he was moving around a lot, but he corrected himself and he’s been taking the best approach of anyone at the plate these last few weeks.
“He went from hitting .200 to over .400 in a matter of a week and half or two weeks. There was a period of time where he was like 17-of-22.”
The offense kept coming for Ross. The Little Giants scored at least one run in each of the first four innings en route to a 9-1 lead midway through the fourth. Ross did a nice job stringing together hits to bring runners home, leaving just five baserunners stranded. Defensively, the Little Giants were able to get the out when they needed it, as Perkins left 12 runners on base, in support of pitcher Brandon Schneider.
Brandon Schneider picked up the win after throwing 5.2 innings, giving up five hits and one earned run with three strikeouts, but he battled some control issues and gave up eight walks.
“His control was a little bit all over the place but he was resilient,” King said. “The first inning he had guys at second and third with one out, he got the kid to line out to third and we doubled up the guy at third, so he found ways out of innings.
“He definitely made me lose what little hair I have, at times, but I was very happy with how he battled back. “
The Little Giants improve to 8-16 overall and will travel to TRAC rival Findlay Friday afternoon.
