FREMONT – One match stands between Alex Thatcher and Trevor Weickert from a sectional tournament championship.

Fremont Ross’ No. 1 double team won a pair of matches Thursday, securing a place in next week’s district tournament, and will play Saturday for a 1 or 2 seed in the district – along with the sectional championship.

After receiving a first-round bye, Thatcher and Weickert won easily over Tiffin Columbian’s Jack Krintzline and Jacob Beemer, 6-1, 6-0.

Then, in the sectional semifinal, they defeated Ashland’s No. 2 doubles team of Luke Blakely and Justin Seamour, 6-3, 6-1, punching their ticket to the championship round.

“They played with so much confidence today,” coach Lisa Wolfe said. “They’re two seniors that are district qualifiers from last year, Alex with singles and Trevor with Lucas (Cronin), so they know what it’s like to go to districts.

“They played with a lot of determination today. They were fun to watch.”

Lucas Cronin

Sam Long

While Thatcher and Weickert are the only Little Giants playing for a championship, they won’t be Ross’ only representatives at the district tournament.

Ross’ No. 2 doubles team of Sam Long and Lucas Cronin also advanced out of the first round with a bye and then won their first match against Norwalk’s Andrew Riley/Wyatt Brown by a score of 6-3, 6-1, earning their berth in the district tournament.

“They played very well, they really played well,” Wolfe said of their first match.

The Little Giants then sailed to a 6-1 first set victory in their semifinal match, against Ashland’s Nolan and Tommy Glazier, then lost the second, 4-6. They took a 5-2 lead in the third set before seeing that lead slip away in a 5-7 defeat.

“I don’t even know what happened,” Wolfe said. “I don’t know if they were overconfident with the big lead in the third set, or maybe the Ashland kids just had more determination to get that first seed.”

Long and Cronin will play in the 3-4 match Saturday against Blakely and Seamour, the team Thatcher and Weickert defeated in their semifinal win.

Nils Nolte

Ethan Moyer

In the singles bracket, Ross’ No. 1 singles player, Nils Nolte cruised to lopsided wins in the first and second rounds, winning by scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0. Despite the easy wins, fatigue took its toll on Nolte in the semifinal match, where he lost to Ashland’s Jack Schultz, 5-7, 1-6.

“He seemed to be playing lethargic,” Wolfe said of Nolte in the semifinal.

Nolte will play Norwalk’s Jack Mei in Saturday’s 3-4 match.

At No. 2 singles, Ethan Moyer had a disappointing finish to his season. After receiving a first-round bye, Moyer just needed to win one more to secure a place in the district and he appeared well on his way to doing so, winning the first set of his match against Jack Mei, 6-2. But the match unraveled for Moyer, as Mei bounced back for a 6-0 win in Set to then won the third set 6-4, ending Moyer’s season.

“It was very disappointing,” Wolfe said. “I’m glad he’s a junior and he can fight (a district qualification) for it next year.”

Drew Miller

At No. 3 singles, Drew Miller’s first season of competitive tennis came to a close in a first-round loss as Tiffin Columbian’s Collin Burkett eliminated Miller, 6-2, 6-2.

While Miller’s season ended, with a season record of 18-11, Wolfe said she can’t remember a player coming out for tennis with zero experience and playing all season on varsity, let alone having the level of success Miller enjoyed.

“In the very beginning we talked about needing to find that seventh player on a talented team,” Wolfe said. “Through our first week of practice he is the one that caught the coaches’ eye. We all thought he could easily pick this up. (A) previous basketball player, tall, muscular, he has an athlete’s build about him and very fast on his feet. He was given the opportunity because he earned it.”

The final round of the sectional tournament will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ross High School.
