BOWLING GREEN – Fremont Ross will be well-represented in the biggest swim meet of the season next weekend.

A half dozen swimmers from the Lady Giants swim team and two more from the boys advanced from Saturday’s Division I district meet to next weekend’s state meet in Canton.

Olivia DeRodes, Alexis Prenzlin, MaKennah Fitzgerald, AnneMarie Moses, Faith Zimmerman and Mara Brown will make the trip to the state meet having either finished first or second in their events Saturday or earning an at-large seed based on their times state-wide.

The Lady Giants finished second as a team, just missing out on a district title. Ross totaled 243 points just nine behind champion Rocky River Magnificant’s 252.

“Districts is always full of ups and downs. We had some great swims and we had some disappointments, that’s kind of how it goes,” girls coach Tina Moses said. “But we’re excited to be runners-up. If we had won that last relay we could have been district champions but runners-up, totally unexpected.

“And it’s a great place to be when you think about we have no seniors,” Moses added. “The whole district team will be back next year along with, hopefully, a few eighth graders that will come in as freshmen and step it up.”

DeRodes took home district championships in both the 50 and 500 freestyles. She also, along with Fitzgerald, Prenzlin and Moses, helped win first place in the 200 medley relay.

Also coming bringing home a district championship was Prenzlin in the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 and 400 freestyle relays took second place to punch their tickets to Canton. The 400 consisting on DeRodes, AnneMarie Moses, Brown and Fitzgerald while the 200 featured Prenzlin, Brown, Zimmerman and Moses.

Prenzlin (200 IM), Moses (100 butterfly) and Fitzgerald (100 freestyle) each placed third in their respective events with Fitzgerald also taking sixth in the 100 backstroke, however, none of their times qualified them to swim in those events at the state meet.

“It kind of depends on the kids and the event,” Tina Moses said of her swimmers’ levels of disappointment not making the cut. “Lexi was not happy with her time in the IM, that was defintely a little disappointment, we were hoping she could go a little bit faster than that. AnneMarie in the 100 fly was a phenomenal time for her, so even before she knew (she didn’t qualify) she was good.”

As for the boys, Andrew Evans earned an automatic bid finishing second in the 100 breaststroke. Dylan Weisenauer also qualified with his time in the 100 butterfly, where he finished fourth in the district. As a team, the Little Giants placed fourth.

Boys coach Phil Moran said the times in the state’s other three district saw many fast swims which bumped a handful of Little Giants out of the meet whereas in most years, they’d have qualified.

“We had some kids that were on the podium that didn’t even have a chance to get out, the state was that fast,” Moran said. “There was just incredibly fast relay swims all across the state. We swam good, we cut a lot of time, especially with the medley, but that didn’t get out.

“You did what you could do, you just can’t control the state,” he added. “You do the best you can, and the kids did, they had a great season, they had swims, they did everything they could. It was just an incredibly fast state meet.”

Evans’ second-place finish in the breaststroke came in a time of 56.39, breaking his own school record. But Moran said both he and Evans believe he can swim faster next week.

“The goal all season was to make it back into the championship finals and he’ll be sitting pretty in good position to do that,” Moran said. “It’s funny, he was disappointed in his time but he broke the school record.”
