LIMA – For the first eight minutes Friday night, Ross’ boys basketball team was hitting its shots and looked like it was due for another neck-and-neck thriller with Lima Senior, just as it had in the teams’ previous meeting.

Then the Little Giants went cold. Shots stopped falling and turnovers became more frequent. By the end of the night, nearly half of Ross’ field goals came in that first quarter and it totaled more turnovers than made baskets in a 70-49 loss to the Spartans.

“Lima has a lot of athleticism, they press, they trap, they try to disrupt,” Ross coach Mark Gedeon said. “We wanted to attack the pressure but, unfortunately, sometimes we got a little too quick there and when Lima Senior gets a turnover, they can turn it into points.”

Ross led 18-16 after the first quarter thanks to three first-quarter 3-pointers by Keyon Sewell. Ross made seven shots in the opening period, but just nine more the rest of the night.

The Little Giants then scored just 15 points combined over the second and third quarters and were outscored by 18 points during that stretch.

Ross had 12 consecutive second-quarter possessions without a scoring as shots either missed the mark or the Spartans’ defense forced the Little Giants to turn the ball over. Ross totaled 18 turnovers on the night – 10 coming in the first half.

Of Ross’ 16 field goals, exactly half came from 3-point range.

“We wanted to attack the pressure and pass to where the help came from,” Gedeon said. “They were clogging up the middle there and got some good kick-out opportunities. Keyon made the three threes early there it was a product of what became available but, yeah, we would have liked to have attacked the rim better and get to the free throw line a few more times.”

Sewell ended the night with five 3-pointers and a game-high 16 points as the Little Giants’ record dipped to 6-12 overall, 2-10 in the TRAC.

After playing five games in two weeks, Ross gets a chance to catch its breath, with a week off until hosting Whitmer next Friday at 7:30.

“It’ll be nice to have four practices in a row, we haven’t had that since the first full week of January when we got back into the school, with all the Tuesday night games,” Gedeon said. “We got to improve. We have to continue to work on our timing and make sure our players are continuing to get better individually and as a team. We want to compete we want competitive practices and to make sure our players are still hungry.”
